गोरखा नेपाल के निवासी हैं और अपनी सैन्य परंपरा के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं। एंग्लो-गोरखा युद्ध (1814-16) में कड़ी मेहनत से मिली जीत के बाद अंग्रेजों ने उन्हें भर्ती करना शुरू किया जो आज तक जारी है। महाराजा रणजीत सिंह ने 1820 के अंत में अपनी सेना का आधुनिकीकरण किया, लेकिन 1849 में प्रांत के ब्रिटिश विलय के बाद इन पैदल सेना इकाइयों को भंग कर दिया गया था। वर्तमान सिख रेजिमेंट 1846 में लुधियाना और फिरोजपुर में अंग्रेजों द्वारा बनाई गई सिख पैदल सेना रेजिमेंट के लिए अपनी उत्पत्ति का पता लगाती है। हालाँकि, महाराजा रणजीत सिंह के क्षेत्र के सिखों को, जिन्हें ‘माझा सिख’ के रूप में जाना जाता है, 1857 तक भर्ती नहीं किया गया था। सिख और गोरखा रेजिमेंट दोनों ने स्वतंत्र भारत के पूर्व और बाद में ख्याति प्राप्त की है। मैं 19वीं सदी में इन समुदायों के रॉयल्टी की सगाई को संकलित करने का प्रयास कर रहा हूं।

गोरखाओं ने सिखों और मराठों (सिंधिया) के साथ त्रिपक्षीय गठबंधन बनाने का प्रयास

गोरखा रेजिमेंट
महाराजा अपनी सेना में एक गोरखा रेजिमेंट रखना चाहते थे। अगस्त, 1815 में उन्होंने 10 गोरखा सैनिकों की भर्ती की। सतलुज नदी के पार एक एजेंट भेजा गया था और सेवा की बेहतर शर्तों के प्रलोभन पर उन्हें गोरखाओं को मनाने के लिए भेजा गया था। कुछ समय बाद एक और प्रयास किया गया; एक एजेंट और संगत सिंह, महाराजा के साथ सेवा में गोरखा सैनिक भेजे गए। फिर भी अप्रैल 1816 में एक और प्रयास किया गया।
बलभद्र कुंवर

1836

मई 1837

इस चिंतित वेड ने ब्रिटिश सरकार को अपने डर की सूचना दी कि खालसा सरकार के साथ मैत्रीपूर्ण संबंध स्थापित करने के लिए नेपाल के उदाहरण का अन्य भारतीय राज्यों द्वारा अनुसरण किया जा सकता है जिससे ब्रिटिश सरकार के खिलाफ शक्ति संतुलन हो सकता है।
जून – अक्तूबर 1837
डॉ गुप्ता कहते हैं कि जून, 1837 में, ‘नेपाल के राजा के कुछ विश्वसनीय व्यक्ति’ कुछ उपहार लेकर अमृतसर पहुंचे। महाराजा ने फकीर नूरुद्दीन को उनकी देखभाल करने के लिए कहा। अगले महीने काजी कानू और नेपाली शासक का एक कप्तान उपहार लेकर आया। उन्हें जनरल वेंचुरा के प्लाटून का ड्रिल दिखाया गया। 11 सितंबर, 1837 को वकील को अमृतसर में गोबिंदगढ़ का किला दिखाया गया। अक्टूबर 1837 में उनकी वापसी पर उन्हें विदाई उपहार दिए गए।
माताबार सिंह प्रकरण 1838
माताबर सिंह नेपाल के प्रधान मंत्री भीम सेन के भतीजे थे, जिन्हें 1837 में पद से बर्खास्त कर दिया गया था। उन्हें शासक द्वारा सात लाख रुपये की राशि के भुगतान पर जाने की अनुमति दी गई थी। वह लाहौर जाना चाहता था लेकिन लुधियाना में उसे हिरासत में ले लिया गया। इस समय तक नेपाली प्रधान मंत्री बहुत शक्तिशाली हो गए थे और कार्यालय वंशानुगत था। माताबर सिंह एक पूर्व उच्च सैन्य अधिकारी और प्रधान मंत्री के भतीजे थे, इसलिए अंग्रेजों के पास संदेह करने का हर कारण था।
महाराजा ने वेड को पासपोर्ट जारी करने के लिए लिखा। वेड ने मामले को गवर्नर-जनरल लॉर्ड ऑकलैंड को अनुमति देने से इनकार कर दिया और 20 सितंबर, 1838 को वेड से पूछताछ की: “सरकार द्वारा किस अभियान की योजना बनाई जा रही थी जिसके लिए उनकी सेवाओं की आवश्यकता थी”?!
नेपाली शासक ने समर्थन में गवर्नर-जनरल को लिखा “माताबर सिंह हमारी इच्छा के अनुसार अमृतसर में श्री ज्वालाजी और दरबार साहिब की यात्रा के लिए और तीन सरकारों के बीच दोस्ती और एकता के संबंधों को मजबूत करने के लिए महाराजा से मिलने के लिए रवाना हुए हैं। उसे लिखित रूप में पासपोर्ट दिया जा सकता है ताकि वह खालसाजी के साथ एक सुखद साक्षात्कार प्राप्त कर सके, और बाद में बिना छेड़छाड़ किए वापस आ सके।

भूपाल सिंह ‘मिशन 1840
भूपाल सिंह और अर्जन सिंह जनरल अमर सिंह थापा के पुत्र थे। भोपाल सिंह जनरल वेंचुरा की स्पेशल ब्रिगेड में एक सैन्य पद पर थे। अर्जन सिंह ने दूसरी रेजिमेंट में सेवा प्राप्त की। यह कहना अनुचित नहीं होगा कि नेपाल में अपनी उच्च स्थिति के कारण वे दोनों सरकारों के बीच मैत्रीपूर्ण सम्बन्ध स्थापित करने के साधन थे। भोपाल सिंह 1838 में नेपाल गए, लेकिन उन्होंने अपने भाई के माध्यम से लाहौर के साथ संचार बनाए रखा। दो साल बाद भूपाल सिंह को लाहौर में एक दूतावास का नेतृत्व करने के लिए चुना गया। उन्होंने जून 1840 को काठमांडू छोड़ दिया, लेकिन क्राउन प्रिंस नौ निहाल सिंह की लाहौर में मृत्यु के कारण मिशन बिना ज्यादा कारोबार किए वापस लौट आया।
तिब्बत के माध्यम से सिख और गोरखा गठबंधन
जेडी कनिंघम ने 1849 में पहली बार प्रकाशित अपनी पुस्तक ‘द हिस्ट्री ऑफ द सिख’ में लिखा है कि अंग्रेजों को संदेह था कि सिख और गोरखा (सरकार खालसा और नेपाल) एक गठबंधन बनाना चाहते हैं। नेपाल द्वारा लाहौर भेजे गए मिशनों की संख्या के आधार पर, हम सुरक्षित रूप से यह निष्कर्ष निकाल सकते हैं कि ऐसा लगता है। ऐसा लगता है कि हम 1840 के बाद नेपाल से लाहौर के लिए एक मिशन खो रहे हैं जिसके कारण महाराजा शेर सिंह ने ज़ोरावर सिंह को 1841 की शुरुआत में तिब्बत के लिए एक अभियान का नेतृत्व करने की सहमति दी थी।

डब्ल्यूडी शाकबपा द्वारा ‘तिब्बत ए पॉलिटिकल हिस्ट्री’ के अनुसार जोरावर सिंह के लगभग 200 सैनिकों (सिख और लद्दाखी) ने शांति संधि के बाद 1842 में तिब्बत में रहने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने स्थानीय तिब्बती महिलाओं से शादी की और तिब्बत के निचले और गर्म हिस्सों में बस गए और तिब्बत में सेब, अंगूर, आड़ू और खुबानी लाए। 200 का आंकड़ा ऊपर की ओर है।

प्रश्न उठता है कि खालसा सरकार के इन पराजित और फंसे हुए सैनिकों को नेपाली शासक पदकों के साथ क्यों भेंट करेगा? शिलालेख स्वयं गौरवशाली है लेकिन इन सैनिकों को सम्मान का वस्त्र भी दिया गया था। ऐसा लगता है कि ब्रिटिश संदेह निराधार नहीं था कि खालसा सरकार और नेपाल के पास पश्चिमी तिब्बत पर विजय के बाद पड़ोसी राज्य बनने के बाद गठबंधन बनाने की नापाक योजना थी। यद्यपि ये सैनिक इस लक्ष्य को पूरा करने में असफल रहे परन्तु ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि नेपाली शासक ने उनके कठिन अभियान को पहचाना और उनके प्रयासों की सराहना की। जाहिर है कि यह इतने शब्दों में नहीं किया गया था क्योंकि नेपाल अब ब्रिटिश सहयोगी था।

कर्नल (सेवानिवृत्त) सरबजीत सिंह ने मुझे बताया कि 2002 में जब वे दार्जिलिंग में GRD, GHOOM (दार्जिलिंग) के कमांडेंट के रूप में तैनात थे, तो उनकी मुलाक़ात ज़ोरावर सिंह के सिख सैनिक के वंशज से हुई, जो तिब्बत में रह गए थे। दार्जिलिंग के चौरस्ता बाजार में एक दुकान चलाने वाले इस व्यक्ति ने उन्हें बताया कि उनके पूर्वज सिख थे। कर्नल सिंह (पगड़ी और दाढ़ी वाले) पहले भी 3-4 बार दुकान पर आ चुके थे और इस तिब्बती व्यक्ति ने स्वेच्छा से यह जानकारी दी थी। उन्होंने उसे बताया कि उनके पूर्वज सिख सैनिक थे जो महाराजा रणजीत सिंह की सेना के साथ तिब्बत गए थे लेकिन बाद में स्थानीय तिब्बती सेना द्वारा उन्हें बंदी बना लिया गया। संधि के बाद, सिख सेना ने उन्हें वापस लेने से इनकार कर दिया और इन सैनिकों ने स्थानीय महिलाओं से शादी कर ली और उनके वंशजों ने बौद्ध धर्म अपनाने की कोशिश की लेकिन स्थानीय तिब्बती समुदाय द्वारा स्वीकार नहीं किया गया। फिर धीरे-धीरे ये लोग इस्लाम में परिवर्तित हो गए,

दिवंगत महाराजा रणजीत सिंह की पत्नी और महाराजा दलीप सिंह की मां महारानी जींद कौर या जिंदन पहले एंग्लो-सिख युद्ध (1845-46) के बाद अंग्रेजों के लिए लगातार ‘कांटा’ थीं। वह दृढ़ संकल्प वाली महिला थीं और अंग्रेज पंजाब में किसी और से ज्यादा उनसे डरते थे। जींद कौर अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ विद्रोह शुरू करने में सक्षम थी, जिसे बाद वाले अच्छी तरह से जानते थे। ब्रिटिश अधिकारी की हत्या के प्रयास और रानी के खिलाफ साजिश सहित कई आरोप लगाए गए और अंग्रेजों ने शुरू में उन्हें सितंबर 1847 में लाहौर से शेखूपुरा हटा दिया और फिर बनारस से निष्कासित कर दिया। 1848 में जब दीवान मूलराज और शेर सिंह अटारीवाला ने विद्रोह किया जिसे द्वितीय आंग्ल-सिख युद्ध (1848-49) के रूप में जाना जाने लगा, तो आरोप लगाया गया कि जींद कौर उनके साथ पत्राचार कर रही थी।
डॉ हरबंस सिंह द्वारा लिखित सिख विश्वकोश में कहा गया है कि महारानी जींद कौर 29 अप्रैल 1849 को काठमांडू पहुंचीं। ब्रिटिश सरकार ने तुरंत उनके 9 लाख रुपये के आभूषण जब्त कर लिए और उनकी पेंशन रोक दी। नेपाल की अदालत में उसकी अचानक उपस्थिति अप्रत्याशित और अप्रिय दोनों थी। फिर भी, प्रधान मंत्री, जंग बहादुर ने उन्हें शरण दी, मुख्य रूप से दिवंगत महाराजा रणजीत सिंह की स्मृति के सम्मान में।
डॉ. हरबंस सिंह कहते हैं कि उनके भरण-पोषण के लिए भत्ते के अलावा वाग्मती नदी के तट पर थापथली में उन्हें एक आवास दिया गया था। काठमांडू में ब्रिटिश रेजीडेंसी ने 1860 तक नेपाल में रहने के दौरान उन पर कड़ी नजर रखी, जो उनके कागजात में दर्ज है। अंग्रेजों का मानना था कि महारानी पंजाब में खालसा सरकार के पुनरुद्धार को सुरक्षित करने के लिए ‘राजनीतिक साज़िश’ में लगी हुई थीं।
नेपाल में जींद कौर का रहना सुखद नहीं था क्योंकि अंग्रेजों के लगातार दबाव में, नेपाल दरबार ने महारानी के प्रति शत्रुतापूर्ण व्यवहार किया और उन पर कई प्रतिबंध लगा दिए। लेकिन पूर्व रानी अवज्ञाकारी थी और जंग बहादुर द्वारा उस पर लगाए गए अपमान और प्रतिबंधों का चुपचाप विरोध करती थी। जब जंग बहादुर ने एक प्रमुख परिचारक को निष्कासित कर दिया, तो महारानी ने नेपाल दरबार द्वारा दिए गए पूरे कर्मचारियों को बर्खास्त कर दिया।

1768 में गोरखा, एक मार्शल जनजाति नेपाल में सत्ता में आई। उन्होंने अपनी सैन्य शक्ति को मजबूत किया और अपने क्षेत्र का विस्तार करना शुरू कर दिया। धीरे-धीरे गोरखाओं ने सिरमौर और शिमला पहाड़ी राज्यों पर कब्जा कर लिया। अमर सिंह थापा के नेतृत्व में गोरखाओं ने कांगड़ा पर घेरा डाल दिया। उन्होंने 1806 में कई पहाड़ी प्रमुखों की मदद से कांगड़ा के शासक संसार चंद को हराने में कामयाबी हासिल की। हालाँकि गोरखा 1809 में महाराजा रणजीत सिंह के अधीन आने वाले कांगड़ा किले पर कब्जा नहीं कर सके। इस हार के बाद गोरखाओं ने दक्षिण की ओर विस्तार करना शुरू कर दिया। इसका परिणाम आंग्ल-गोरखा युद्ध के रूप में सामने आया। वे तराई बेल्ट के साथ अंग्रेजों के साथ सीधे संघर्ष में आ गए जिसके बाद अंग्रेजों ने उन्हें सतलुज के पूर्व में पहाड़ी राज्यों से खदेड़ दिया। इस प्रकार ब्रिटिश धीरे-धीरे इस क्षेत्र में सर्वोपरि शक्तियों के रूप में उभरे।
आंग्ल-गोरखा युद्ध के बाद ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य और पंजाब की साझा सीमा बहुत संवेदनशील हो गई थी। सिख और अंग्रेज दोनों सीधे संघर्ष से बचना चाहते थे, लेकिन रणजीत सिंह की मृत्यु के बाद खालसा सेना ने अंग्रेजों के साथ कई युद्ध लड़े। 1845 में जब सिखों ने सतलुज को पार करके ब्रिटिश क्षेत्र पर आक्रमण किया, तो कई पहाड़ी राज्यों के शासकों ने अंग्रेजों का पक्ष लिया क्योंकि वे पूर्व के साथ बदला लेने के अवसर की तलाश में थे। इनमें से कई शासकों ने अंग्रेजों के साथ गुप्त संचार किया। प्रथम एंग्लो-सिख युद्ध के बाद, अंग्रेजों ने सिखों द्वारा खाली किए गए पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों को उनके मूल मालिकों को वापस नहीं किया।
